How can I determine whether my cylinder is reusable so as to replace just the piston?

The most common problem of a cylinder that needs replacement is in case there are scratches into the surface of the tube where the piston runs.

What other parts I may need to replace on my machine when replacing the piston?

To replace the piston you need to disassemble the engine, so you also need to replace the cylinder gasket, at least. Also, it is recommended to check the piston bearing.
